May 16 Sarria

It's 5:30 in the evening here.  The day is winding down for us except it never wound up today. Here's the story.

Woke up at the usual time. Decided we were whipped. Got dressed. Went downstairs to ask the owners if we could stay another day and night. Went back up. Saw the woman from South Africa sitting on the step texting. They had the same notion realizing how tired they were.  Went back to sleep until 2!!! Got up. Walked into town, had pizza and gelato . Now back in our cave sitting cozily by the fire.  Our bodies communicated exactly what they needed. And they insisted that we listen.

According to the plan, now we will arrive in Santiago by next Tuesday, earlier than we anticipated.  We have a thought of going by tren to Pamplona and walking the part we didn't walk from there to Burgos. It should take 10 days which we have; if we need to we'll take a cab for parts of the longer days.  It's a plan! What else are two peregrinos to do?

Some observations  in answer to a friend's questions. Catholicism is not alive and well in Spain. It's a tradition-people get married, confirmed, buried but not practiced as a part of daily or weekly life.  The USA is a much more fanatically religious country.

The only McDonald's we have seen was in Leon. No big box stores . Small supermercados and then individual cheese, bread, meat stores. Wow. I forgot about them. No take out food. No Starbuck's. no paper cups. Great coffee while socializing at a bar.

The big cities of course are different.

WiFi is everywhere. Even the smallest of hamlets. Recycling too.  Siesta is sacred.

But there is no work.  All over Europe is in economic crisis except Germany.  Greece, Italy, Spain the worst. But I don't see signs of this. I wouldn't know it if people didn't tell us. No evident poverty. No begging. In fact,CC dropped 20 Euros and a man stopped and hailed us down the street to return it.  That was today. Yesterday on the same corner, two Spanish boys yelled, "fuck you," as we passed. They were practicing their English.

Oh gosh. I could go back to sleep. Rainy here. NW weather patterns in Galicia. These mountains are the first land mass for 5,000 kilometers from the Atlantic.
